Syria is a country of around 18 million inhabitants which needs an accredited centre for the treatment of congenital heart disease. The association Bambini Cardiopatici nel Mondo has collaborated with the University of Damascus for more than 10 years: 10 years ago the Association launched a project to create a paediatric cardiac surgery and cardiology centre adjacent to the paediatric university hospital of Damascus.
The center has been inaugurated on 24 July 2011. It's very modern and allow operations to be performed on 800-1000 children per year. The project has been carried out in collaboration with the cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Directorate General for Development Cooperation. It is expected that the agreed cooperation with Syria will also involve a training programme for medical and paramedical personnel through the allocation of scholarships by the I.R.C.C.S San Donato General Hospital, together with local surgical missions for more complex cases.
