Senegal has a population of around 13,000,000 inhabitants and a mortality rate of 55.16 (data from CIA World Factbook - June 2012). Congenital heart disease constitute a major portion of this percentage so that it is estimated that currently some 30,000 Senegalese children are waiting for acardiac operation. Each year 800 to 1000 children are born with complex congenital heart disease, but 80% of them die within the first 5 years of life, without receiving specialized medical treatment. In Dakar, Senegal's capital, there is now a center for cardiology, cardiac surgery and cardio-vascular surgery, but it is devoted mainly to adult patients.
The Association, in collaboration with the Fann University Hospital, San Donato General Hospital and the association Chaine de l'Espoir of Paris (France), has started a project for the construction of a new Unit of Cardiac Surgery and Pediatric Cardiology at the Fann University Hospital. Once completed, the new unit will consist of two operating rooms, hemodynamics, the ICU area (12 beds), the area of pediatric hospital (25 beds), the area of hospitalization for adult congenital (6 beds) and the area for meeting rooms and medical offices. In addition, it will be implemented a training program for local medical and nursing staff and operating missions will be made on site.
