Peru has a population of around 30 million inhabitants and only 2 heart surgery centres.
Every year around 3000 children are born who suffer from congenital heart disease, of which only 300 can be operated on in the centres situated in the country.
The Peruvian surgeons still need to acquire experience in the surgery of complex cases and surgery for neonates. The programme of collaboration with the association Bambini Cardiopatici nel Mondo, named One hope for Peru started in 2003 and finished in 2009: during the following period 8 doctors were trained, more than 400 children were operated, new paediatric intensive care room with 4 beds at Limas's Hospital was constructed.
In the future the collaboration will carry on through the scientific meeting organization and doctors and nursing staff training.
