The Amazon project falls within the larger Peru project: it consists of the creation of a paediatric cardiology diagnosis centre that facilitates the timely diagnosis of congenital heart disease in order to able to select the children in need of surgery.
The centre was inaugurated at Iquitos on 11 November 2005 and serves more than 2 million people who live in the area. It has echocardiography and electrocardiography equipment and a computerised system for the filing of information and sharing of images via telemedicine. Furthermore, a scholarship for the training of a paediatric cardiologist has been awarded which will be carried out by the I.R.C.C.S. San Donato General Hospital.
